Almost everyone suffers from acne at some point in their lives. For people living with severe acne, it can seem like there is no way to fight it off. The unsightly blemishes, cysts, nodules and pimples resist every treatment you’ve thrown at them.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) may prove successful even in severe cases resistant to other treatments. The bacteria Propionibacterium acnes can infect plugged up pores and trigger your immune system, inviting nodules and cysts to appear on your skin. By eliminating the bacteria, your skin can recover from this skin disease.

During treatment, a thin layer of clear medication will be applied to your skin to make it more responsive to light. The laser will pass harmlessly through your skin. The procedure will shrink sebaceous glands to reduce oil production. The high powered laser also destroys the unwanted bacteria while passing harmlessly through your skin.

PDT has been shown to reduce severe acne by up to 70%. The treatment is not painful, and the most common side effect is red skin, similar to a sunburn. You should take care to avoid sunlight and strong indoor light for 48 hours after a treatment. Not only will PDT help reduce acne, it can also reduce the size of pores, improve the appearance of acne scarring, and leave you with a healthy glow.

At your consultation, a personalized treatment plan will be discussed. Most patients will have 3-4 sessions spaced 3-4 weeks apart. Full results will be apparent three months after treatment.
